ROP Celebration of Success Honors Student Excellence
Foundation Awards
$39,500
Two hundred and thirty-three outstanding North Orange
County ROP students were honored at the annual Celebration of Success on
Friday, May 2, at the Heritage Forum Theater in downtown Anaheim.
Over 1,000 people attended the event to support and applaud student
excellence. Students are nominated by their instructors, and go
through a paper screening and interview process. 182 high school
seniors and adults were each awarded $50.00 for the honor of being
nominated: the 51 high school juniors were each awarded $25. All
were brought to the stage and their names read as nominees. The
award winners remained on stage as their stories were read.

ROP's John Puckett Chosen
One of
Top Five Orange County Teachers

John Puckett,
North Orange County ROP’s Building Industry Technology Academy
teacher at Katella High School, was named one of the top five Orange
County Teachers of the Year during a surprise visit Tuesday, May 13,
to his classroom by the awards team and school administrators.
The announcement
intersected John’s lesson on interviewing skills at an unbelievable
spot. “Just like last week,” John was telling students, “I had
one chance to impress the panel who interviewed me for the teacher
of the year award. . . .” At that point Orange County
Superintendent of Public Instruction Bill Habermehl and the team
opened the door and shocked John and his students with the
announcement that his interview had gone very well indeed. As
he handed John the trophy, Superintendent Habermehl told John’s
students that “your teacher is among the top five of 23,000 teachers
in Orange County.”
John received
prizes from each of the sponsors, including a $1000 check from
SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union for his classroom. In November,
John will be honored at a special banquet at the Disneyland Hotel.
He will also be entered into the state contest.
Each year one
teacher from every ROP, school district, and community college
district in Orange County is selected as Teacher of the Year from
their respective institutions. Teachers must submit a packet
of materials including three letters of reference and statements on
several topics, including why they think they are effective in the
classroom. County Office of Education officials and Orange
County Register, Disneyland, and Schools First Federal Credit Union
representatives decide on fifteen entrants to interview. The
top five were selected from the interview.
Congratulations
John!

In 2004, Mike
Doyle, ROP Auto Body Repair instructor at Fullerton High School was
also chosen as one of the top five
teachers.
