ROP/Loara Auto Team #1
in National Contest!

Russ Bacarella’s ROP/Loara High School team of Jonathan Greenhalgh and Ben Hicks took first place in the National Automotive Technology Competition held in New York City on April 6 and 7 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in conjunction with the New York International Automobile Show.

This year more than $3 million in prizes and scholarships will be awarded to participating students and schools thanks to the generous support of almost every major automaker, industry suppliers, local dealerships, and dealers' associations.

Thirty teams from across the US and Canada survived their county/state dealership contests to reach the national challenge.   The ROP/Loara team won first place in the Orange County Automobile Dealers Association’s annual troubleshooting contest held in January at Hyundai America headquarters in Fountain Valley.

On the first day of the two-day contest, students were tested at severalstations on their knowledge of tools, measuring instruments, specific vehicle components and job interview skills. This component accounted for 60% of the total team score.  On the second day of the contest, students were asked to thoroughly repair as many of a vehicle’s pre-set faults as possible and to document their repairs correctly on the repair orders in a three-hour span.  Their rating on this challenge counted for 40% of their total score.

The county-wide and national competitions are sponsored by Dealer Associations. Additionally, the Orange County Automobile Dealers Association paid for round-trip air fare to New York, lodging, and meals for Bacarella and the students. All of us at North Orange County ROP thank OCADA for their support, and Toyota of Orange, which is the primary training site for our winning team.

North Orange County Regional Occupational Program operates many career technical training programs in North Orange County high schools.  It is a joint powers effort to provide top quality career education to the students in the Anaheim Union, Fullerton Joint Union and Brea Olinda, Los Alamitos and Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School Districts.  For more information, visit the website at www.nocrop.us
