ROP's Professional Dance Performance
Polished, Colorful, Energizing Fun

More than 150 ROP Professional Dance students at Western High School gave two mesmerizing performances last week on the school’s Forum stage in several different dance styles, from lyrical to hip-hop.  The high-spirited dancing energized everyone who saw it.

ROP instructor Daniel Batimana has not only put the joie in the vive at Western High School, but dance students have to have at least a C average to participate in the class and in performances.  The result is those who needed to have brought up their grades--quite an accomplishment for a first-year class.

ROP Digital Photo Class Ignites Careers
for Two Students

David Feiner and Joe Soria, both students in Stacy Kogut-Martinez’s Digital Photo class at Magnolia High School, have started their own photography business.  David, a senior, ROP Student of the Year at Magnolia, and Joe, a junior, shot their first professional job in late April at the Crystal Cathedral and at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine, a debut for fellow student Allison Algoso.

David has been the unofficial school photographer this year, covering all of Magnolia High Schools events.

Both students are employed elsewhere as well.  Joe recently was hired as a photographer at Knott's Berry Farm, and David works in fast food but will be applying for photography positions.

Two ROP Classified "Employees of the Year" Honored by Board

Belinda Musick, administrative assistant, Technology Services,  was complimented on her customer services skills and cheerful attitude.  Belinda has been with ROP since 1993 and started her current position in 2001.  She keeps track of technology equipment in the lending library as well as handling the scheduling for Technology services.

Victor Hernandez, instructional technician for Marine Diving, was honored for the gentle and encouraging manner he uses when helping students in class and promoting ROP classes to high school students.  Victor has been a vital part of the kelp reforestation project that is repopulating the waters off Orange County beaches.  Victor also started with ROP in 1993.

Congratulations, Belinda and Victor!

ROP Fetes Retirees

ROP honored retirees Mike Doyle and David Grace at the May Board of Trustees meeting with a reception and laudatory speeches by the Board President, Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin, Superintendent Michael Worley, Ed.D., and Administrators Bill Nelson and Tony Garza.

Mike Doyle has been in the exact same spot for 36 years, Fullerton High School Auto Body Lab.  Because of how he engages students, and what a good teacher he is, Mike was named one of the top five top Orange County Teachers in 2005 by the Orange County Department of Education.  Over the years Mike Doyle helped thousands of students find lucrative careers in motorcycle and small watercraft engine repair as well as auto repair and primarily, auto body repair.  Mike has been a chaperone for many students at countless auto shows.  Students have never had to have a car to learn the tricky job of paint application in his class—little metal trash cans work just as well.

David Grace has taught Legal and Law Occupations at Anaheim High School for ROP since 2001.  Before that he was a police officer/investigator with the Anaheim PD for 27 years.   Dave was very involved with safe schools; worked with the police explorers for more than 20 years, and started a police science program at Loara before becoming involved with ROP.

Retirees unable to attend the party were Cathy Carrigan, Stephen Covington; William Schubert, Adriann Berger, Laurry Bishop, and Tim Bruner.

Adriann Berger has taught Business Technology for ROP since 1974.  First she taught primarily adults, then moved to several different high school campuses, including Buena Park, Magnolia and Sonora. Adriann was also active in the WASC process, serving on both home group and focus group committees.

Laurry Bishop has taught photography At Brea Olinda High School for the program since 1982. He also taught Landscape Design at Brea for ROP for a couple of years in the 80s. His class was wildly popular with students.

Cathy Carrigan has been teaching Advanced Dental Assisting since 1997.  When she came to North Orange County ROP, she had been helping students to learn about dental assisting for 19 years.  For the past 12 years, students have learned the finer points of dental assisting from Cathy.

Steve Covington has been teaching Auto Technology at Savanna High School for ROP since 1994.  Steve has had the unique role of testing prototypes in the United States for Volkswagen and other manufacturers.  He didn’t keep those cars at home, but brought them to his auto shop for the students to help test.  He was also close to several NASCAR drivers, who brought their cars along with advice about how to get into the field to Steve’s classroom.

William Schubert joined ROP as an instructional aide in the HVAC program in 1994.  It wasn’t long before his teaching abilities became apparent, and in 1999, Bill became a full time teacher in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning department.  Bill’s honest and forthright way with students and his gentle teaching manner combined to produce great students.

Tim Bruner, administrative assistant to Bill Nelson, has been with ROP since 1993.  Bill gives Tim all the credit for making him look good.  Tim works with Bill’s instructors and aides to make the instructional block run smoothly.  Tim is fearless when it comes to holiday revelry.  His costumes are legendary.  Tim never forgets a birthday, and is known for his funny sense of humor.
