Katella ROP BITA Team Number One
in HBC's
Design/Build Contest
The temperatures reached record-setting highs as
ROP Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) student teams
from six high schools labored to build playhouses and snack
shacks at the Orange
County fairgrounds April 18 and 19 in the 20th
annual Design/Build competition.
The Home Builders’ Council-sponsored event drew
high school, college and youth program competitors from as far
as San Jacinto. North Orange County ROP BITA program high
school teams came from Anaheim, Katella, Magnolia, and Western
High Schools in the Anaheim Union High School District; Brea
Olinda High School in the Brea Olinda Unified School District;
and Valencia High School in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified
School District.

Katella’s Number
one Design/Build ROP team proudly displays the championship
banner provided by OCB Reprographics. Instructor John
Puckett has entered teams in the competition for eight
years.
Katella
High School’s team, under the direction of Instructor John Puckett, won first place
for the second year in a row, and
Western
High School, with Instructor Jerry Cates directing, took third place. Instructors
Jeremy Cates, assisted by Ron Ponce, Engineering Design, Anaheim
High School; Javier Belmares, Brea High School; David Webb,
Magnolia High School; and Roy Morrison, Valencia High School,
assisted by Mike Reed, Construction instructor, Gilbert High
School, directed their teams in the two-day event.

Western
High School’s Design/Build
ROP team, under the
direction of Instructor Jerry Cates came in third in a
field of ten.

North Orange County ROP Board President, Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin, Lynne Porter,
Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, Fred Navarro,
Assistant Superintendent, Education/Special Education, Anaheim
Union High School District; Bill Nelson, Administrator,
Instructional Services, Toni Mahoney, Career Guidance
Specialist, Katella High School, and Pat Hansmeyer, Manager,
Public Information Services, were all there to cheer on the
teachers and the students.
Congratulations to all who participated.

Dan Aguilar’s Visual Communications student, Jacob Gomez,
designed the Katella Knights logo that emblazoned the hard hats
for the “number one” Design/Build team.
