Katella ROP BITA Team Number One
in HBC's Design/Build Contest

The temperatures reached record-setting highs as ROP Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) student teams from six high schools labored to build playhouses and snack shacks at the Orange County fairgrounds April 18 and 19 in the 20th annual Design/Build competition.

The Home Builders’ Council-sponsored event drew high school, college and youth program competitors from as far as San Jacinto.  North Orange County ROP BITA program high school teams came from Anaheim, Katella, Magnolia,  and Western High Schools in the Anaheim Union High School District; Brea Olinda High School in the Brea Olinda Unified School District; and Valencia High School in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Katella’s Number one Design/Build ROP team proudly displays the championship banner provided by OCB Reprographics.  Instructor John Puckett has entered teams in the competition for eight years.

Katella High School’s team, under the direction of Instructor John Puckett, won first place for the second year in a row, and Western High School, with Instructor Jerry Cates directing, took third place.  Instructors Jeremy Cates, assisted by Ron Ponce, Engineering Design, Anaheim High School; Javier Belmares, Brea High School; David Webb, Magnolia High School; and Roy Morrison, Valencia High School, assisted by Mike Reed, Construction instructor, Gilbert High School, directed their teams in the two-day event.

Western High School’s Design/Build ROP team, under the
direction of Instructor Jerry Cates came in third in a field of ten.

North Orange County ROP Board President, Thomas “Hoagy” Holguin, Lynne Porter, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, Fred Navarro, Assistant Superintendent, Education/Special Education, Anaheim Union High School District; Bill Nelson, Administrator, Instructional Services, Toni Mahoney, Career Guidance Specialist, Katella High School, and Pat Hansmeyer, Manager, Public Information Services, were all there to cheer on the teachers and the students.

 Congratulations to all who participated.
