Ben  Hicks  Wins  Gold  in  Skills  USA  Auto  Contest

Ben Hicks, one of the two ROP Automotive wizards from Loara High School who took first place at the OCADA competition last month, won gold at the Skills USA contest held at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut on Saturday, February 6.  Ben will compete in the state Skills USA finals in San Diego on April 9-10.

Ben was recently hired by Fletcher-Jones Mercedes in Newport Beach.  His ROP Automotive Technician instructor, Russ Bacarella, has a goal of helping his students earn free advanced education.  By entering and excelling in local, state and national competitions, several of his students have consistently done that for the last several years.

Ben Hicks is pictured here with the trophy he received for his contributions to the first place team at the Orange County Dealership Association's troubleshooting contest on February 23

Congratulations, Ben and Russ!

La Habra, Sonora Auto Tech Teams Place
In Los Angeles Dealer Association Contest

Two sets of Dave Endo’s ROP Auto Technology students entered the January 29 Los Angeles Automotive Technology Competition at Cerritos College for the first time with great results.  La Habra High School students Randy Evens and Alex Soto won third place with 68 points, and Sonora High School students Cody Loomis and Jeremy Leung took fifth place with 66.5 points.  The third place winners received $250 in Matco tools.  Both teams were coached by their instructor, David Endo, and sponsored by the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association (SMCDA).

Students were asked to complete tasks at ten testing stations, including air conditioning, front end, brakes, manual transmission, automatic transmission, engine component identification, engine measurements, engine performance, emission control, and electrical systems.

Southeast ROP won the competition, (70.5 points) with last year's national champion, the Agoura High School team, ranking second (69.5 points).

Congratulations to Dave and his students who spent hundreds of hours outside of class preparing for the contest!

2011 Teacher of the Year

Robert Villegas

Digital Arts Instructor Robert Villegas Named
2011 ROP Teacher of the Year

Robert Villegas, ROP Multimedia Production and Visual Arts Instructor, was surprised Friday, February 19, when North Orange County ROP Superintendent Michael Worley, Ed.D, Fullerton Union High School Principal Cathy Gach, Ed.D, a number of staff and FUHS photography students invaded his classroom.  He was even more surprised when Dr. Worley said, "Congratulations, you've been selected as ROP's 2011 Teacher of the Year!"

Robert will be honored by the Orange County Department of Education next fall in a ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel, and entered into the countywide competition for Teacher of the Year that culminates in a national contest.

As a young man, Robert learned bass guitar and keyboards, played in local bands, and was a DJ for clubs in the Orange County/Los Angeles area. At 23, he decided to take a computer course at North Orange County ROP, liked it, and soon enrolled at Cypress Community College.  He began working at ROP as an aide in the Business Technology class at the Sequoia facility in 1989.

Robert and some of his band mates formed HyperDisk Media Inc., which specialized in website design, animation, and CD-ROM development with Robert as the Audio/Video Manager. Robert soon started his own company, ProDigital Services, in partnership with a co-worker and fellow band member.

Robert graduated from Cypress College with an AS degree and soon after received a teaching credential through USD.  He began teaching computer applications for ROP at his high school alma mater, Buena Park High School.

Robert liked teaching better than business, so He sold his half of ProDigital at the peak of its success, and developed a new course, Multimedia Production, for ROP. The course was quite successful at Buena Park, and ROP asked him to start it at Fullerton Union High in 2002.  Since then, he has helped to build the Digital Arts and Humanities Program within the Academy of the Arts at Fullerton.

Robert was also the Digital effects supervisor for the 2007 movie, The Hidden Epidemic, written and directed by Bill Brown, which spotlights post-concussion syndrome.

Robert, who works with English, math, and history instructors in the Digital Arts and Humanities small learning community at Fullerton Union High School, has collaborated with the school librarian to organize a digital history of the school.   Robert is the adviser of the Digital Arts and Humanities Club (DAH)and helps to organize the DAH festival every year. His colleagues call him patient, persistent, and very helpful to everyone in the school community.

Fullerton Union High School Principal,
Cathy Gach Ed.D., stands proudly with
Robert and Dr. Worley.

The county-wide Teacher of the Year competition is sponsored by the Orange County Department of Education, Disneyland, The Orange County Register, and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union. Winners of the contest will be announced next fall.

Congratulations, Robert!
