Cal-HOSA Photo Gallery
Some of the pictures from the event display ROP’s confident,
smiling, students. Do you see Lynne Porter? That’s right;
she’s an LVN student in her not-quite-retirement. You’ll
notice she brought home three gold medals!
Congratulations
to all of you and thank you to HOSA advisors Elizabeth McPeak,
Valerie Easton, Bridget Wulff and Lupe
Rodriguez!

Brea Mall Hosts
ROP’s Chocolate Tea Party
Rick Royal’s
Advanced Baking Students have done it again— created a world of
chocolate fantasy that includes characters from Wonderland—
Alice, the Cheshire Cat and the Red Queen—
as well as a tea party where all the partiers are bunnies!
Many thanks to Swiss Chalet Fine Foods for donating hundreds of
pounds of chocolate; the donation allowed students the luxury of
creating the wonderful fantasy world.
You can see the Chocolate Tea Party at the Brea Mall,
Lower level,
JCPenny Court until March 31, and then it’s back through the
looking glass...
until the next time.
Legal and Law Enforcement Students
at Loara High School
Win Public Anti-Smoking Artwork Prizes
When
the request for entries to a bus shelter poster contest came
across Legal and Law Enforcement instructor John Siebert’s
desk, he thought it would make a good extra credit project for
his students. Sponsored by the Orange County Health Care
Agency’s TUPP (Tobacco User Prevention Program), the contest
required students to create posters decrying the Hollywood
influence on youth to smoke cigarettes. John had no idea three
of his Loara High School students would win top prizes in the
contest.

Marcela Belmar created one prize-winning bus shelter poster that
is displayed at the corner of Euclid and Cerritos, and the team
of Tomas Mendoza and Randy Roman created a second prizewinner
that graces the bus shelter at Euclid and Sallie in Anaheim.

On Wednesday, March 3,
the
students were honored at unveilings of their
work
by the Orange County Health Care Agency'. The students were
presented with certificates and free passes to the movies, as
well as small framed copies of their work. Additionally, John
Siebert was presented with several framed copies for his
classroom and the Loara High School Library. Karen Nelson,
assistant superintendent at North Orange County ROP, and Dr.
Nabil Slim, assistant principal at Loara High School, attended
the ceremonies.

Miranda Chavira honored at ACSA’s
“Every Student Succeeding” Awards Ceremony
Miranda Chavira, a student at
Los
Alamitos High School in Kathleen Rea’s Child
Development class, was honored Friday, March 19, at the ACSA
(Association of
California School Administrators) Every Student Succeeding
Breakfast Celebration at
the Irvine Marriot Hotel. The recognition program honors
students who exceed expectations against extreme odds, and the
educators who support them along the way.
A conscientious student and competitive athlete, Miranda is a
team leader and the first to assist others needing help.
Miranda was honored for her tenacity, her spirit and her ability
to strive towards her future goals.

Susan Souza’s Engineering Team
Second Place Winners in Raytheon Contest
Fullerton’s Raytheon plant invited pre-engineering students from
local high schools to participate in a trebuchet-building
contest on February 19 during Engineering Week, The students
teamed with Raytheon engineers as part of a multi-disciplinary
team in a competitive event involving engineering design and
construction.
Students trebuchets were judged by how far the machine threw a
rubber ball. One of Susan Souza’s ROP Engineering
student teams from Sunny Hills High School placed second in the
contest. (They said they missed first by mere inches.).

Sandy Wang, Soohyun Goo and
Michael Chung took second place.
Also participating from the class were Michael Ju, James
Park and Albert Han.

Superintendent’s Advisors Develop “Top Ten” List
Dr.
Michael Worley
hosted a Superintendent’s Advisory Breakfast at the Education
Center Board Room on Friday, February 25. City officials,
Chamber Executives, Business people and board members attended
the meeting which was designed to gain input on how to market
ROP
in tough times. The group helped to develop the top ten reasons
ROP is important to all students.
-
Quality—Engaging instruction providing real life, hands-on
experiences
-
Career skills—Industry certifications leading to real jobs
and higher pay
-
Pathways—Sequenced classes including bridges to higher
education, including UC a-g requirements and articulation to
area colleges.
-
Relevance—Students understand the connections between
classrooms and the world
-
Accessibility—Easy in, easy out, regional, after school and
evenings
-
Equipment—Up-to-date and meets industry standards
-
Leadership Skills—Necessary for careers and higher education
-
Choices—Learning what combination of education/training is
necessary to advance in a chosen career and where to obtain
it
-
Self-esteem—Accomplishments in ROP classes builds confidence
necessary to seek employment and/or further education
-
Affordability—No cost or low cost
The list will be used throughout the year to promote ROP
opportunities to parents, community members and educators.
