Magnolia High
Earns #1 Spot in
In Design/Build Contest!

Magnolia High School’s Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) team, under the direction of instructor David Webb, earned first place in the Home Builders Council-sponsored Design/Build competition held April 10-11 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Third place honors went to Jeremy Cates’ students at Anaheim High School.  Student carpenters struggled against the contest clock to build a grown-up-sized playhouse in sixteen hours over a two-day span.

Instructors ran their teams like construction crews; some students worked while others waited in the wings, ready to be rotated in to give someone else a rest.  David Webb’s Magnolia BITA team finished an hour and a half early, and called for a final inspection.  They hung plants on the front porch, and placed a pre-made wooden number “506” –their Magnolia room number—over the front door.  Their house was complete!

North Orange County ROP had five other teams in the contest:  Mike Reed’s BITA team, Trident Education Center; Javier Belmares’ BITA team; Brea Olinda High School; John Puckett’s BITA team; Katella High School; Roy Morrison’s BITA team, Valencia High School; and Jerry Cates’ BITA team, Western High School.  Pre-engineering instructor Ron Ponce assisted the Anaheim High team, and Robert Albright, Masonry instructor, and James Murphy, Construction Trades instructor at Los Alamitos High School, assisted the Gilbert team.   There were twelve teams in the contest.

Home Builders Council members sponsored the teams, providing building materials as well as tools, hard hats, and shirts for the event.  The Home Builders Council sponsors scholarships to worthy students in the Light Construction Development Management certificate (LCDM) program at UCI.  They also support schools that provide construction-related classes and programs.  ROP thanks all who contributed, and a special thanks to Kathy Johnson, the executive director of Vital Link who started Design Build twenty-one years ago, and who is instrumental to its continued success. Congratulations to all the teams who participated in the construction marathon.

Overheard conversations during the contest include the following:

“Is this plumb?”

     “Measure exactly! I need 18 3/8 inches here, not 18 1/2 inches.”

“Wrong nails, guys—take these out and put in 8 penny nails.  It     doesn’t make a  difference to you now, but it will make a difference to someone down the  line.”

Scariest of all—

            “Owww!”

“That’s why we have hard hats, folks.”
