Western PLTW Students
Launch ROV

During the last days of school things are supposed to wind down, but not so in Steve Heck’s ROP Project Lead the Way class at Western High School.

Students launched their ROV (remote operated vehicle) into Western's swimming pool.  After a few test launches to troubleshoot the propeller length the ROV completed a dive, left and right turns.

This was a very real world project, as ROVs are playing a very important role in the effort to cap British Petroleum's exploded oil well that is spilling in the Gulf.

Masonry Student Wins Dale and Bea Stuard Scholarship

Fernando Romero, masonry student in Robert Albright’s class at the Career and Technical Institute on Anaheim’s Trident campus, and Celebration of Success award winner, added the Dale & Bea Stuard Scholarship to his list of awards.  The scholarship, from the Building Industry Association of Orange County, is for $3,125.00.  Added to the scholarship money he earned from Celebration of Success, his total scholarships this year totaled $4,815.00. Fernando will have a little help in becoming the general contractor he wants to become!

Final Recital for Dancers is also Swan Song for Instructor

Western High School Dancers moved to the music publicly for the final time this year as they kicked, stomped, swayed and jumped in their last recital of the year on the Western stage Friday, June 4.  Instructor Danny Batimana has opened his own dance studio in La Habra so he will not be returning in the fall.

Melody Morris will begin to teach Professional Dance for ROP at Western High School in the fall. She has been teaching dance to junior high students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Culinary Arts Graduation Honors Students

Graduation is always attended by mixed emotions, and the Culinary Arts Institute graduation this June was no exception.  Some graduates were eager to move on, some hardly wanted to leave at all, and the rest hovered in the zone between the two emotions.   All were eager to express their gratitude to the chefs and staff for the exacting, demanding and extremely empowering education theiy received t the ROP Culinary Arts Institute.  Here is what they had to say:

“What started out as curiosity quickly grew to Become a passion.  The more I learned the more I enjoyed culinary.  I loved it so much that I plan to continue my education in pastry and baking in hopes of becoming a cake decorator.”

Renia Guinaugh

Western High School graduate 2010

Culinary Arts Foundation

Pastry Chef/Baker

Renia’s prizewinning cake featured plenty more than just a fantastic flower!

“ I started in the Culinary Arts because it was the fastest way to get my high school elective credits.  I soon started to enjoy cooking and wanted to learn more.  Now that I am done I want to get a job in the food industry at entry level and work my way up.  I will take what I’ve learned from here and use it.”

Jennifer poses with  Board of Trustees President, Marilyn Buchi.

“I got started in the culinary school by taking safety and Sanitation class with Chef Cindy.  Then from there I went on to take the other Culinary classes.  Now that I am done with ROP, I plan to go to college and get a business degree in the culinary field.  Without the help of all the chefs that are here now and the chefs that have moved on, I would of not been able to graduate.  They have taught me so much about the safety, fundamentals and presentation that goes with the culinary arts.”

To graduate, students must complete two of three sets of courses in Culinary Arts Foundation; Professional Chef, and Professional Pastry Chef/Baker.

Doug De Roxas listens to compliments from Chef Shane at the graduation ceremony.

Board president Marilyn Buchi, and Board member Robert Hathaway and his wife, Karen Gerace Hathaway, attended the event.  Superintendent Michael Worley, Ed.D, offered congratulations, and Assistant Superintendent, Educational Programs, Karen Nelson attended the event.  The graduation was conducted by Julie Dentler, Administrator, Instructional Programs, Chef Shane Cassidy, and Chef Cindy Greer. The students were also congratulated by Chef Rick Royal, and Anna Ledbetter.

Anaheim City Council Honors Auto Technicians

Mayor Curt Pringle and the City Council of Anaheim honored Ben Hicks, Jonathan Greenhalgh and their ROP Automotive Technician teacher, Russ Bacarella, at the June City Council Meeting with proclamations praising their prizewinning effort at the National Automobile Dealers' Association Automotive Technician contest held in New York City last April.

The two Loara High School students won the national title after taking first place in the Orange County contest.  They are pictured with the mayor of Anaheim, City Council members, and their principal, Pam Krey (right).

Staff Notes
  Leadership Team Honors Teachers, Staff
  with End of Year Barbecue

Budget cuts and other depressing news out of Sacramento hasn’t deterred ROP teachers and staff from giving 110%.  You just have to look at student achievement, or be a fly on the wall overhearing staff conversations to know that.

Superintendent Mike Worley came to the leadership team with the suggestion of having a taco cart barbecue in the warehouse on ROP’s last school day, June 17, to honor teachers and staff—and asked the question did the leadership team think they could provide that?  Everyone agreed, and the appreciation lunch was born.  Teachers and staff who were checking out for the summer stopped by to enjoy the tacos, and potluck salads and desserts brought in by office staff.

Maria Duhansky made signs that said "thank you" in many different languages, and Ron Ponce especially thanked Carol Jones for donating $100.00 to The Ride to Cure Diabetes.

Dr. Worley thanked everyone for their great work this year.  A good time was had by all, and everyone has been asking if this is going to become an annual event.

North Orange County ROP Personnel Drop
Hundreds of Pounds in “Biggest Loser” Contest

North Orange County ROP staff needed to lighten up... seriously.  So they decided to have a “Biggest Loser” contest, and to make it interesting, they put their money where their mouths were!  The contestants were divided into two teams "A" and "B" by blind choice.   Each of the 23 contestants put $60 into a pot for a total of $1,380.00.  It was agreed that contestants would weigh in with Jeanie Davis every two weeks; every two weeks’ winner would receive $5, and every winning team would be credited with $5 to add to the payout at the end of the 15-week session, which lasted from February 16 to May 27.

It was also agreed that the female winner and the male winner would each receive the largest percentage of the money and the rest of the losers would divide the leavings by percentage of weight lost

Mike Russell lost 43 pounds and Anna Ledbetter lost 28 pounds. They were both on the lucky "A team", which won the team prize.

Biggest Loser winners Anna Ledbetter and Mike Russell turn down cupcakes at the Teacher/Staff appreciation luncheon.

There may have been some who lost more in pounds, but all weight loss was calculated by percentage of original body weight.   The North Orange County ROP lightened up by 235 pounds and we are all feeling better for it.  By the way, Mike and Anna each took home close to $500.

There is another ‘Biggest Loser” program scheduled for fall 2010, and interest is running high.
