Vocational Nursing is a competency-based
ROP course that prepares students in the skills
needed to pass the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensing
Examination - Practical Nursing).
Modules are as
follows:
1. Fundamentals of Nursing I:
Care of patients
with simple health problems, a summary of nursing history,
skills related to activity and movement, initiating nursing
care, vital signs, medical terminology, ethics and legalities
related to the nursing profession.
2. Fundamentals of Nursing II:
Classroom
instruction, skills lab, and clinical experience in the
acute/long-term care facility; safety, documentation, asepsis,
anatomy and physiology overview, pre and post-op care, fluids &
electrolytes, communications, the grieving process, ethics, and
the law.
3. Pharmacology:
Medications, their
source and uses, calculation of dosage and safe administration
of prescribed medications, classifications of drugs according to
body systems.
4. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Endocrine System
Nursing care and
pre/post-operative care for patients with hyperthyroidism,
hypothyroidism, thyroidectomy, diseases of the adrenal glands,
diabetes mellitus, and complications associated with these
conditions.
5. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Nutrition
Basic principles of
nutrition as it relates to health and disease, assessment of the
nutritional status of the hospitalized patient, therapeutic
intervention, and recognition and reporting of nutritional
deficiencies.
6. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Gastrointestinal System
Signs, symptoms, and
treatment for common conditions of the esophagus, stomach,
intestine and associated organs (liver, gallbladder and
pancreas).
7. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Neuro-sensory System
Basic neuro anatomy
and physiology, intervention/management of common neurological
diseases and disorders
8. Medical-Surgical Nursing: Integumentary System
Care of patients
with problems of the skin, including dermatological conditions,
infections, ulcerations, tumors, dermatological and plastic
reconstructive surgery.
Integrated
throughout the course are career preparation standards, which
include communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving,
safety, technology, and other employment skills.
Students complete
600 hours in classroom instruction and 1000 hours in a clinical
setting.
