Project Lead the Way, (PLTW)
designed by engineers in response to
the shortage of students preparing
for and entering engineering-related
fields, introduces students to the
scope, rigor, and discipline of the
engineering profession.
Students who successfully complete
the courses earn University of
California approved elective
credits.
Public
school students should see their
on-campus counselor to apply for
this program.
Private, home-schooled, or out-of
district high school students may
call (714) 502-5859 or (714)
502-5874 for application
information.
GOALS
Increase
number, quality, and quantity of
graduates with engineering backgrounds.
Offer
project-based, hands-on experience that
increases mathematics and
problem-solving skills.
Provide
opportunities for career exploration
before college
Prepare
students for transition to colleges and
universities
FOUNDATION COURSES
Principles of Engineering: Students
explore the wide variety of careers in
engineering and technology. Through
activities and projects, students tackle
problems to learn first hand how engineers
use math, science, and technology in a
problem-solving process to benefit people.
Introduction to Engineering Design: Students use a problem-solving model to
improve existing products and invent new
ones. Using sophisticated 3-D modeling
software (Autodesk®
Inventor®), students analyze potential
solutions and communicate ideas to others.
SPECIALIZATION
COURSES
Principles of Engineering: The two foundation courses will
prepare students to take the following
specialized courses:
Aerospace Engineering
Biotechnical Engineering
Civil Engineering and Architecture
Computer integrated Manufacturing
Students can then take
Engineering Design and Development
(capstone course) in their senior
year.
COLLEGE
CREDIT FOR STUDENTS
Principles of Engineering: Students
who earn at least an 85% average in a PLTW
course, and score 70 or above on the college
credit exam will qualify for college credit
with PLTW university affiliates. (Note:There
is
tuition fee for each course).
