What is ROP?

Career-technical training courses, services, and specialized programs

North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (ROP) offers year-round career-technical training as part of the California public school system. North Orange County ROP teaches skills to 22,000 high school and adult students each year. There are 74 regional occupational programs and centers in California.

Employers: ROP can provide you with skilled applicants for your job openings.

What kind of classes and services are offered by ROP?

Career and technical training is offered by ROP in a wide variety of career fields.
High school students have registration priority over all other students. Adults may register in some classes as space permits. Career and technical training is offered by ROP in almost any field where there is a promising local job market. Classes are taught in simulated work settings in high school or ROP campus settings.  All high school students are eligible to take appropriate ROP Classes.

ROP course availability falls into four basic categories:

On-campus high school classes held during the school day (limited to high school student's attending the home school on a regular basis). There are are no registration fees for public or private high school students taking regular courses.

Off-campus and after-school classes for ALL high school students (courses at various locations - available to students registered within school districts North Orange County ROP serves). There are are no registration fees for public or private high school students taking regular courses.

Programs open to adult students as well as high school students. These courses are offered on various days at various times, including daytime, late afternoon, evening, and weekends. Adults are required to pay a tuition fee of $60 per class (fee-waivers may apply for qualified adults).  There are are no registration fees for public or private high school students taking regular courses.

Fee-based classes open to adult students as well as high school students. These courses are not publicly funded and there are no fee waivers.  Fee-based, student-funded classes are offered on various days at various times, including daytime, late afternoon, evening, and weekends and the fee costs vary per course.

What are fee-based classes?
In an effort to continue serving adults, we are now offering fee-based classes.

Fee-based classes are not publicly funded and all enrolling students pay a fee (cost varies per class) that does not include the cost of materials or textbooks. Charging fees for classes is a way for ROP to continue serving adults. For additional information please see the Registration page.

The registration fees for fee-based classes vary in amount, and the per class fees are more than $60.

Fee-based classes are not funded through public funds.  Students pay one fee per class.  Fee waivers are not available.  Costs of materials and textbooks are additional.  Classes do not run when enrollment is too low.  Fees can only be refunded up to one calendar day before a class starts.  This procedure allows ROP time to notify all students if the class is not running.

Notice: California Education Code 5230.8 requires ROPs to place a priority on the education of high school students.

Can you earn high school elective credits for ROP classes?

Yes, elective credits may be applied toward high school graduation. The number of credits is determined by your high school.

Do ROP classes count for college credit?

Certain classes help you earn advanced placement and/or college credit if you earn a grade of A or B.  Ask your instructor about articulation agreements with local colleges and post-secondary schools.

Advanced Placement and Credits

North Orange County Regional Occupational Program has entered into articulation agreements with several local community colleges.  These agreements permit students who have completed our programs to enroll in further training at the community college without having to repeat some of the basics, and receive college credits for some classes.

The requirements to receive the advanced placement and/or credits vary by the individual course.  Inquiries should be made with your instructor to learn the specifics.  College processing fees may apply.

Please see the course schedule for specific information.  View a list of classes for which high school students can earn University of California a-g credits. Click here.

Where are classes held?

ROP classes are held at four facilities and 25 high schools in the North Orange County region. Additionally, more than 650 local businesses support ROP with on-site training for ROP students. Visit our Locations page.
