This course provides training for employment in infant/child
care centers, preschools, and school age child care programs.
Training occurs through classroom instruction and participation
in laboratory preschool/child care programs and/or private
infant/toddler centers, preschool, and child care centers in the
community. Educational workshops are provided for students on a
weekly or bi-weekly basis to develop quality teachers of young
children in a continuous, responsive, interactive process. Focus
is on experiential learning and developmentally appropriate
practices.
The curriculum develops such critical workplace skills as
communication and interpersonal skills, personal and
professional growth, critical thinking, creative
problem-solving, strong academic skills, safety/health, and an
understanding of the role of technology. These skills are
central in preparing all students for effective, successful
careers.
This course is open-entry, open-exit and competency based.
Students may choose to focus their skill development in any or
all areas. Students complete 370 hours of classroom/laboratory
training and up to 360 hours of community classroom/cooperative
vocational education training.
Prerequisites:
1. 16 years of age
2. Adults (18 years of age) need to have fingerprints and
criminal background clearance.
3. TB clearance
Student Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on the basis of hands-on performance,
written tests, and active classroom/laboratory participation.
The completion of the units outlined in the following major
instructional guidelines assures that successful completion of
the course of instruction. Students must master competencies
deemed necessary for entry-level employment.
