What is ROP?

Who can take ROP classes?

photo of studentsROP Classes are primarily for high school students. Classes are open to public, private, and home-schooled students.

Classes open to adults are listed in the Online Catalog of Scheduled Classes and Fee-based Courses.  Certain classes that are not regular school day high school courses are open to adults, including some Health Sciences and Medical Technology classes, and all Culinary Arts Institute classes, and Masonry classes, but high school students always have enrollment priority.

ROP classes are appropriate for students who want to: earn high school credits, prepare for advanced education and training, learn new skills for employment and/or increase work experience, or earn advanced placement/credits at area colleges.  

Can students earn high school credits in ROP classes, and/or college credits through articulation agreements?

Students can earn elective credits that will be applied toward high school graduation when they take any ROP class.

Additionally, ROP has articulation agreements with certain local community colleges. Students can earn advanced placement or college credits at several area colleges by successfully completing certain ROP classes with a grade of A or B, and by completing the college's requirements. 

High school students can earn University of California "g"
and "f" fine arts credits in specific ROP classes.

What kinds of classes are offered?

rop student photoROP offers career and technical training in area job market fields that are in demand and offer more than minimum wage to students with ROP training.

Where and When are ROP Classes held ?

rop studentsROP classes are offered during the school day and after school on most high school campuses in our five districts.  Some classes are offered on weekends, mostly at ROP facilities.  Some classes are offered in local businesses, shops, entertainment venues, health clinics, and hospitals.  ROP has training partnerships with more that 600 area businesses.

Can I start a class in the middle of the semester?

student imageROP has approximately eighteen open-entry classes. High school students can enroll in these classes at any point of time if there is space available.  There are six classes that may be started mid-semester.  Adult participation is permitted in a few classes.  More About Courses...

Can I take an ROP class at another high school?

student imageStudents can take classes at a high school other than the one that they normally attend, and the credits will transfer to their school.  Most high schools allow students from other schools to attend ROP classes on their campuses after regular school hours.  High school students will find the After-school Schedule helpful for finding classes of interest at that are offered other schools.

How can I show others (including employers) what I have learned in my ROP
class(es)?

students imageWhen you successfully complete an ROP class, you are issued a record of competency.  This official document details all of the skills that you learned in the class.  ROP will teach you how to prepare a portfolio that includes the official transcript of your career skills, as well as your job-seeking and keeping skills.

Does ROP recognize/assist outstanding students?

student imageStudents are North Orange County ROP are nominated each year by their teachers and counselors for outstanding performance. ROP has traditionally honored students at a Celebration of Success ceremony.  Local individuals, foundations,companies, and corporations donate monetary awards and cash prizes that are presented to outstanding students. 

Where can I find descriptions of ROP classes?

The Online Schedule provides details for currently running classes. Visit our Courses page to locate course descriptions arranged by career pathway. Our printed course catalog also presents general information, including class descriptions.  The annually printed catalog is available at all North Orange County ROP facilities and at ROP counseling offices at ROP district high schools.


Are ROP preschools on some high school campuses?

North Orange County ROP's six preschools are state-licensed laboratory training sites for high school students.  If you are a parent or guardian you may be interested in having your preschooler enroll in one of our preschool programs on a high school campus (for four days a week).  Read More...

ROP serves communities in north Orange County and parts of Los Angeles County. Cities served include Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Habra, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Placentia, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Whittier and Yorba Linda.
