SUPPORT SPECIALIST

BASIC FUNCTION:
Provides hardware and software
support to administrative staff, instructors and support personnel.
Develops documents and updates in-house personal computer software
applications programs.
TYPICAL
RESPONSIBILITIES:
·
Monitors and test
functionality of local and wide area networks, operating systems and
peripheral equipment.
·
Responds to user
questions regarding software and hardware utilization, including basic
trouble-shooting procedures.
·
Sets up and
installs software applications programs and hardware, including printers,
monitors, keyboards, modems, scanners and related equipment.
·
Sets up printers
and operating systems to run weekly inventory reports, student attendance
reports, guidance reports and other work orders.
·
Distributes
computer records and reports to departmental representatives and
instructors.
·
Enters, edits and
prints monthly Business Office Board Reports, Donation Reports and student
attendance records.
·
Backs-up hard disks
and magnetic tapes on a regular basis.
·
Contacts vendors to
arrange computer maintenance and repair work and to identify and resolve
technical problems.
·
Develops custom
software applications and documentation for data base, spreadsheet and
graphics report applications.
·
Updates yearly
departmental databases.
·
Manages the
technical support help desk.
·
Orders and
distributes computer printer paper and supplies as needed.

DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Requires knowledge of DOS, WINDOWS, NOVELL and NT operating systems and the
use of diagnostic software products; database architecture and computer
logic; network designs- its administration and maintenance; personal
computer word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphics applications
programs, including use of macros, templates and programming techniques:
uses and applications of peripheral equipment.
Skills required include use of network and database servers, routers, hubs
and switches, scanner, tape or CD-based back-up equipment, and
telecommunications equipment.
Ability to install disk drives, modems and expansion cards and to install
and set-up personal computers and peripheral equipment; follow established
programming procedures and techniques; train departmental users in uses and
applications of computer technology; solve practical problems and deal with
a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited
standardization exists; organize, prioritize and complete tasks to meet
deadlines; research and interpret computer manuals and operating
specifications and explain software and hardware applications to users;
investigate and resolve basic hardware and software problems; create
effective formats for data displays; add, subtract, multiply in all units of
measure; communicate effectively with instructors, staff, departmental
representatives, vendors and management.
Experience/Training/Education:
Required: High school diploma or
general education degree (GED) supplemented by coursework and on-the-job
training in the use of data processing operations and applications programs;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of
personal computer hardware and software support experience, including the
maintenance of operating systems, LAN/WAN networks, and the modifications of spreadsheet, database and word
processing applications programs within in a personal computer environment.
Special
Requirements/Certification:
Possession of a valid Class C or Class 3 California driver’s license and the
ability to travel to various office and instructional sites to provide
computer support.
SALARY RANGE: $3,620 - $4,400 per month
