Class descriptions
Accounting Occupations—If you earn money, you’ll want
to keep track of it, and accounting shows you easy ways to
do that. You’ll learn how to prepare income statements and
balance sheets. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn
software such as Excel, Word, QuickBooks Pro and Peachtree
Accounting. The class prepares you for entry-level
employment in office settings and advanced training.
Business Technology—You will learn to organize
paperwork, compose business letters, build databases to
output spreadsheets, and create PowerPoint slide
presentations. You will have the opportunity to learn
beginning to advanced keyboarding and Microsoft XP software,
including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The class prepares
you for entry-level employment in office settings and
advanced training.
Careers with Children: Preschool Lab (CC)—Are you patient,
inventive, creative and organized? If so, then you are
ready for this real-world setting. You will learn to
recognize developmental markers in children ages 2 ˝ to 5 in
the preschool lab. You’ll learn teaching methods that work
to help little children learn and love to learn in a happy,
structured environment. You are preparing for advanced
training and entry-level jobs in careers with children.
Carpentry/Construction (Building Industry Technology
Academy)—Are you happiest working with your hands,
creating things that last? You’ll learn how to use both
hand and power tools safely; how to read blueprints, measure
and specify materials, and build projects from the ground
up. You may participate in contests and community events
such as Paint Your Heart Out or Habitat for Humanity. The
four-year program will prepare you for advanced training,
jobs, or apprenticeships.
Dental Core—This one-semester introductory class will
help you decide whether or not a career in dentistry is the
one for you. You’ll learn basic dental terminology, how to
use and care for dental tools, and some basic maxillofacial
anatomy and physiology. This class prepares you for success
in the dental assisting class. After-school
class is for high school students.
Design and Fabrication for Engineering Careers—You
will explore metalworking careers through projects that call
for hand and/or machine tools. You’ll learn the basics of
CNC (computer numerically controlled) machining, CAM
(computer assisted machining) and engineering design solid
modeling. The class prepares you for entry-level employment
and advanced training.
Introduction to Engineering Design—Part of Project
Lead the Way, this class has a curriculum designed by engineers for future
engineers! You will design solutions to real-world
challenges, including improving existing products and
inventing new ones. Using sophisticated three-dimensional
modeling software, you will analyze the problems, create
design solutions, and clearly communicate your ideas and
product details to others. Students who successfully
complete the one-year class are eligible for one year of UC-approved
a-g elective credit.
Principles of Engineering—Part of Project Lead the
Way, this class boasts a curriculum designed by engineers for future
engineers! Using activities and projects, you will learn
how engineers and technicians use math, science, and
technology in an engineering problem-solving process. The
course addresses social and political consequences of
technological change. You will explore careers in
engineering and technology, including technology systems and
manufacturing processes. Students who successfully complete
the one-year class are eligible for one year of UC-approved
a-g elective credit.
Financial Services (Banking)—You will
devote two nights each week to learning the skills you need
to work as a teller, loan clerk and customer service
representative in a bank, credit union, or other financial
institution. If you complete the classroom portion
successfully, you may be allowed to intern for a semester.
There are many part-time positions in banks, and employer
banks often help their employees with college education
tuition reimbursement.
Introduction to
Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation—You
will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and
investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a
crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills,
your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science. This class prepares students for entry-level
employment and college studies in the field.
Legal and Law Enforcement—You will gain an
understanding of criminal, traffic and juvenile law, judicial
proceedings, and emergency preparedness. The class
emphasizes the importance of safety, effective
communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills as
well as professional development. Successful students
may
have the opportunity to participate in field trips to
justice institutions and "ride-alongs" with police officers.
The class prepares you for advanced training.
Medical Core—You will learn basic anatomy and
physiology and the medical terminology to describe it.
You’ll also learn some basic skills such as using universal
precautions and safety standards, taking vital signs, body
mechanics, and infection control. You’ll study ethical
standards and socio-economic issues in health care. The
class prepares you for further study in health care
professions. The after-school class
is open to adults: space permitting.
