Class descriptions
Child
Development—You’ll
study children’s developmental stages from conception through early
adolescence. You will focus on the emotional/psychological, cognitive and
physical aspects of development, and on the influences on development of
heredity and environmental factors. Students who successfully complete
Child Development (one year course) are eligible for one year of UC-approved
a-g credit. The class prepares you for advanced education.
Building
Industry Technology Academy—Are
you happiest working with your hands, creating things that last? You’ll
learn how to use hand and power tools safely, read blueprints, measure and
specify materials, and build projects from the ground up. You may
participate in contests and community events such as Paint Your Heart Out,
or Habitat for Humanity. The four-year program will prepare you for
advanced training, jobs, or apprenticeships.
Computer
Graphics and Design—You’ll
learn the “can’t live without it” software for professional computer artists
and designers—Adobe Photoshop®, Adobe Illustrator®, and InDesign®. The
print production theory and techniques you’ll learn will prepare you for
entry-level employment as a layout artist, graphic artist, desktop publisher
and/or production artist. You will develop a portfolio of your work to show
the world your creative and technical skills.
Health
Fitness/Sports Medicine—Love
sports and fitness? You will learn to prevent sports injuries by the use of
proper body mechanics in exercise and to recognize and evaluate sports
injuries when they occur. You will learn rehabilitation methods and current
treatment modalities. You will also learn to assess health fitness and
develop an exercise regimen to maintain and promote physical well-being.
The class prepares you for advanced training.
Stagecraft—You
will learn to create and design scenery, props, lighting and sound for
theatrical productions. Scene construction involves using carpentry, props
and paint to bring a production to life. Lighting design sets the visual
mood, and sound design makes sure the audience hears what the production
author and director want them to hear. You’ll also learn to operate a
variety of production equipment, including construction tools and equipment,
mixing boards, microphones, rigging and curtain equipment; and lights,
spotlights, border light and fixtures; and create and plan production
schedules.
Traditional Photography with an Introduction to the Digital Domain—You’ll
learn to capture the moment forever then manipulate it with editing
software. You’ll gain the ability to create pleasing compositions,
understand the history and aesthetics of classic mid-century photographers,
and gain the skills to shoot portrait, wedding, product, and news photos.
You’ll study both black and white photography/developing and color
photography. Students who successfully complete the class are eligible for
UC-approved fine arts credit. Earn advanced placement or credits at Cypress
or Orange Coast College.
Visual
Communications—If
you agree with the quote “A picture is worth a thousand words,” you’ll want
to take this class. You’ll learn the fine art of communicating visually,
using art and graphic design concepts, elements and principals of design,
color theory, and typography in your projects. This class is a-g college
credit certified. Students who two-semester course can earn one year of UC-approved
fine arts credit.
