Descriptions of ROP classes for Cypress High School students:

Careers with Children: Preschool Lab—Are you patient, inventive, creative and organized? If not, you will learn to be in this real-world setting.  You will learn to recognize developmental markers in children ages 2 ½ to 5 in the preschool lab.  You’ll learn teaching methods that work to help little children learn and love to learn in a happy, structured environment.  This class prepares students for advanced training and for working with young children in preschool and home settings.  Orange Coast College grants advanced placement and/or credits at the college to students who complete the course with grades of A or B.  See your instructor for details.

Child Development—You’ll study children’s developmental stages from conception through early adolescence.  You will focus on the emotional/psychological, cognitive and physical aspects of development, and on the influences on development of heredity and environmental factors.  Students who successfully complete Child Development (one year course) are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g credit.  The class prepares you for advanced education.

Emergency Medical Responder—If you are interested in any public safety service career—firefighter, paramedic, police officer, lifeguard—this class will get you started on the fast track.  You’ll learn skills to provide immediate care to ill or injured persons and assist Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers.  You will learn emergency assessment and triage skills and responsibilities. Completion of this class satisfies the prerequisites for the EMT class, and prepares you for more education.  After-school class for high school students.

Floral Design—Do you have an eye for pleasing design?  Are you creative and love to work with your hands? In Floral Design you will learn flower, foliage and tool identification, plant propagation, construction of floral arrangements and corsages, merchandising, elements and principles of floral design, and skills essential for employment in the floral industry.  This class also prepares you for advanced education in horticulture.

Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a crime scene.  You’ll learn who to interview and what questions to ask.  You’ll sharpen your reasoning skillls, your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic science detection techniques.  This class prepares you for entry-level employment and college studies in the field.

Health Fitness/Sports Medicine—Love sports and fitness?  You will learn to prevent sports injuries by the use of proper body mechanics in exercise.  You’ll also learn to recognize and evaluate sports injuries when they occur.  You will learn rehabilitation methods and current treatments.  You will also learn to assess health fitness and develop an exercise regimen to maintain and promote physical well-being.  The class prepares you for advanced training and for working under supervision with your school’s sports team members.

Legal and Law Enforcement—You will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to the body and mind; criminal, traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and emergency preparedness.  The class emphasizes the importance of safety, effective communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills as well as professional development.  You may have the opportunity to participate in field trips to justice institutions and ride-alongs with police officers.  The class prepares you for advanced training.

You'll learn about the workplace from experts while earning elective credits and preparing for a great job.  This a great way to start your career today.  Why delay?
