High School Student Guidance

Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to high school graduation, as determined by the participating district. The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of program attendance and active participation.

Explore careers at Loara High School!  The following ROP classes are for high school students.  After-school classes may be available to ALL high school students, and to adults (space permitting.)

Introduction to Automotive TechnologyIf you love cars, you’ll want to learn all the basic automotive systems, from brakes and their components to the electrical system and its parts.  In this class you’ll learn how to change fluids, perform safety inspections, and document service needs.  By the end of the class you’ll be able to disassemble, inspect and service drum and disc brakes and adjust brake fluids and learn what every component in the car does. 

Automotive TechnologyAs an advanced student, you’ll learn servicing procedures, how to identify component parts, diagnose faults, replace parts, and rebuilding, repair, and adjustment procedures.  The course prepares you for advanced training and for further technical education.

Basic Occupational TrainingStudents with developmental/emotional disabilities learn occupational skills for manufacturing and service jobs.  Students will learn employment and social interaction skills, emphasizing safety and personal hygiene.  The goal is to create a smooth transition from school to work.

Careers with Children: Preschool LabAre you patient, inventive, creative and organized?  If not, you will learn to be in this real-world setting.  You will learn to recognize developmental markers in children ages 2 ˝ to 5 in the preschool lab.  You’ll learn teaching methods that work to help little children learn and love to learn in a happy, structured environment.  This class prepares students for advanced training and for working with young children in preschool and home settings.  Orange Coast College grants advanced placement and/or credits at the college to students who complete the course with grades of A or B. 

Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)You will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a crime scene.  You’ll learn who to interview and what questions to ask.  You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills, your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic science detection techniques.  This class prepares you for entry-level employment and college studies in the field. 

Legal and Law EnforcementYou’ll gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to the body and mind. You will also learn about criminal law, traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and emergency preparedness.  The class emphasizes the importance of safety, effective communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills as well as professional development.  You may have the opportunity to participate in field trips to justice institutions and "ride-alongs" with police officers.  The class prepares you for advanced training.

Medical CoreYou will learn basic anatomy and physiology and the medical terminology to describe it.   You’ll also learn some basic skills such as using universal precautions and safety standards, taking vital signs, body mechanics, and infection control.  You’ll study ethical standards and socio-economic issues in health care.  The class prepares you for further study in health care professions.  After-school class is for ALL high school students, and adults (space permitting).
