Guidance
Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can
help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and
assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may
assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career
research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to
high school graduation, as determined by the participating district.
The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of
program attendance and active participation.

ROP classes are for Magnolia High School students.
After-school ROP classes may be open to ALL high school
students.
Class
offerings are subject to change each semester.
Building
Industry Technology Academy—Are
you happiest working with your hands, creating things that last? You’ll
learn how to use hand and power tools safely, read blueprints, measure and
specify materials, and build projects from the ground up. You may
participate in contests and community events such as Paint Your Heart Out,
or Habitat for Humanity. The four-year program will prepare you for
advanced training, jobs, or apprenticeships.
Child Development—You’ll
study children’s developmental stages from conception
through early adolescence. You will focus on the
emotional/psychological, cognitive and physical aspects of
development, and on the influences on development of
heredity and environmental factors. Students who
successfully complete Child Development (one year course)
are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g credit. The
class prepares you for advanced education.
Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You’ll
learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and
investigation, crime scene photography, and how to diagram a
crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills,
your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science. This class prepares students for entry-level
employment and college studies in the field.
Legal and Law Enforcement—You
will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to
the body and mind. You will also learn about criminal law,
traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and
emergency preparedness. The class emphasizes the importance
of safety, effective communication, problem-solving, and
interpersonal skills as well as professional development.
You may have the opportunity to participate in field trips to
justice institutions and "ride-alongs" with police officers.
The class prepares you for advanced training.
Medical
Assistant - Clinical (Back Office)—You'll learn how to
greet patients, take vital signs, record patient's current
complaints and medications, recognize infection, and set up
patient rooms for specific types of examinations. You
will learn how to assist a physician give physical exams,
minor surgical procedures, electrocardiograms, administer
medication, and do laboratory procedures such as blood
withdrawal, urinalysis, and specimen collection. You will
also learn how to assist with clinical diagnostic procedures
There are prerequisites for this class.
Medical Careers I (two semesters)—You'll learn how to take
patients vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature,
and pulses per minute.
You’ll learn about
diverse occupations in medical/health occupations found in
hospitals, community health centers and clinics. You will
learn about the roles and responsibilities of various health
care providers. This two-semester class will prepare you for
further study.
Photography: Introduction to Digital Photography—You’ll
learn to capture the moment forever then manipulate it with
editing software on the Macintosh computer using Photoshop
and scanning. You’ll gain the ability to create pleasing
compositions, and gain the skills to shoot portrait,
wedding, product, and news photos. You are training for
entry-level jobs in photography and for advanced education.

Magnolia High School Photography
Principles of Teaching and Learning—You’ll
explore the many facets of the teaching profession, and if
you do well, you can intern in an elementary school to learn
by teaching. You’ll find out how schools are governed,
learn the principles of effective teaching, classroom
management and curriculum design. Students who successfully
complete this class (one year) are eligible for one year of
UC-approved a-g elective credit. (High school students have
to have TB clearance for the internship.)

about the workplace from experts while earning elective
