High School Student Guidance

Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to high school graduation, as determined by the participating district. The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of program attendance and active participation.

Explore careers at Savanna High School!  The following ROP classes are for Savanna High School students.  After-school ROP classes may be open to ALL high school students.

Introduction to Automotive TechnologyIf you love cars, you’ll want to learn all the basic automotive systems, from brakes and their components to the electrical system and its parts.  In this class you’ll learn how to change fluids, perform safety inspections, and document service needs.  By the end of the class you’ll be able to disassemble, inspect and service drum and disc brakes and adjust brake fluids and learn what every component in the car does.  

Automotive TechnologyIn this advanced class, you’ll learn to use diagnostic equipment to find operational faults, document the faults, and repair them.  You’ll learn to perform service and repair on a variety of steering systems; align wheels and diagnose problems based on tire wear patterns; repair tires, diagnose and repair all types of brake systems and refinish brake drums; understand, diagnose and repair electrical systems malfunctions; perform battery service; repair or replace ignition systems and all lights on the car; understand and repair mechanical engine functions, computerized functions and fuel systems, and repair driveline components and systems, and much, much more.

Careers With Children: Preschool Assistant and School Age Child Care Assistant—Want to be a teacher or child psychologist?  You’ll learn how to work with preschoolers to school-aged children in the classroom and in a school setting.  If you are employed in a preschool or after-school program already, you may be able to earn elective credits for your work experience.  Students are preparing for entry-level jobs and advanced training. After-school class is designed for ALL high school students.

Introduction to Culinary Arts—If you love to cook or want to learn, this introductory class will give you more than the basics.  You’ll learn garde manger (the art of fruit and vegetable carving, or how to turn a pumpkin into a coach); basic cooking, and some international cooking.  You’ll also learn safety and sanitation, nutrition basics, and food service operations. The class will prepare you for entry-level jobs and advanced training.

Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a crime scene.  You’ll  learn who to interview and what questions to ask.  You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills, observation skills, and knowledge of forensic science detection techniques.  This class prepares you for entry-level employment and college studies in the field

EMT The Emergency Medical Technician class may be available for you to take at Savanna or at another location. After-school class

Legal and Law Enforcement—You will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to the body and mind; criminal, traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and emergency preparedness.  The class emphasizes the importance of safety, effective communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills as well as professional development.  You may have the opportunity to participate in field trips to justice institutions and "ride-alongs" with police officers.  The class prepares you for advanced training.

Medical Careers Academy: Exploring Medical CareersFind out if health careers are right for you in this two-semester class.  You'll learn how to maintain health with good nutrition, and how to ensure that children grow and thrive by studying human growth and development. Youll learn body systems, study chronic and communicable diseases; learn medical terminology and abbreviations; and gain understanding of legal, ethical, and socio-economic issues. (Meets the Anaheim Union High School District Health requirement.)

Medical Careers Academy: Medical Careers
I—You will identify roles and responsibilities of a wide variety of health care professionals and apply basic entry-level health care to patients in supervised health care settings, including doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals.  You are preparing for advanced training.

Medical Careers III Medical Assistant - Clinical (Back Office) two semesters
You will learn to greet patients, take vital signs, record current medications and complaints, set up patient exam rooms for specific types of examination; recognize infection; assist the physician with physical exams and minor surgical procedures; learn to attach leads and administer electrocardiograms; administer medication; perform laboratory procedures, including blood withdrawal, urinalysis and specimen collection; and assist with diagnostic procedures. You are preparing jobs such as medical clinical-back office assistants.

Medical Careers Academy: Fundamentals of Nursing—You’ll learn how to care or patients with simple health problems. Skills you will learn include initiating nursing care, taking vital signs and essential body mechanics for moving patients. You will also learn medical terminology and nursing history in addition to the ethical and legal requirements of the nursing profession.

Nurse Assistant – Long Term CareIf you love caring for people and tending to their needs, you may love the nursing profession.  This course will teach you basic nursing care, emergency procedures, communication, and working as a member of the health care team.  You’ll prepare to take both written and skills presentation nursing examination, which will qualify you for the California State Nurse Assistant Certification. This course prepares you to work in Skilled Nursing Facilities, Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF), and ICF for developmentally disabled residents.  High school students must be 16 years old or older to enroll in this class.
