Guidance
Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can
help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and
assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may
assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career
research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to
high school graduation, as determined by the participating district.
The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of
program attendance and active participation.

Most of the following classes are for Sonora High
School students only.
After-school
classes may be open to ALL high school students, and to
adults (space permitting).
Aquatic/Marine Diving Occupations (Beginning Scuba Diving)—Want
to work as a marine biologist, scuba instructor, dive
master, salvage diver, lifeguard? Then this class is for
you! Learn in the Sonora pool during the week, travel to
the ocean for the real thing every other Saturday.
Beginning class includes training in Community Water Safety
and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Earn advanced
placement or credits at community colleges. The class
prepares students for advanced training.
After-school class
Aquatic/Marine Diving Occupations/Marine Science—Use
your diving skills to acquire an understanding of marine
life, habitats, and economies. Experience research
environments and gain a working knowledge of marine algae,
plants, animals, and explore their structures, functions,
behaviors and adaptations. Ocean dive every other Sunday.
Students who successfully complete this class with a grade
of A or B are eligible for one semester of UC-approved a-g
credit. Class prepares students for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
After-school class
Art in Animation—If
you’re serious about a career in the commercial
art/animation world, take this class! This 3-D computer
animation, 2-D graphics and animation, traditional media,
and design course includes design, rendering and animation
using Softimage XSI and Maya software. Students in grades 9-12 may
enroll.
Introduction to Automotive Technology—If
you love cars, you’ll want to learn all the basic automotive
systems, from brakes and their components to the electrical
system and its parts. In this class you’ll learn how to
change fluids, perform safety inspections, and document
service needs. By the end of the class you’ll be able to
disassemble, inspect and service drum and disc brakes and
adjust brake fluids and learn what every component in the
car does.
Computer Graphics and Design—Paint,
inks, brushes and computer software are all tools in the contemporary artist’s box. You’ll learn graphic software
such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and print
production preparation. This class gets you ready for
entry-level employment in such positions as layout artist,
graphic artist, desktop publisher and production artist, as
well as for advanced education.
Child Development—Want
to be a teacher or child psychologist? You’ll learn the
stages from conception through early adolescence, including
the major theories of development and their application.
Focus is on emotional/psychological, cognitive, and physical
development, and on the influence of heredity and
environmental factors. Students who successfully complete
this one-year course are eligible for one year of UC-approved
a-g credit. Students are preparing for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
Culinary Arts (Beginning and Advanced)—If
you love to cook or want to learn, this class will give you
more than the basics. You’ll learn garde manger (the art of
fruit and vegetable carving) basic cooking, and some
international cooking. You’ll also learn safety and
sanitation, nutrition basics, and food service operations.
The class prepares students for entry-level jobs and
advanced training.
Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction)—You
will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and
investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a
crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills,
your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science. This class prepares students for entry-level
employment and college studies in the field.
Principles of Engineering—Part
of Project Lead the Way, the course curriculum was designed by engineers for future engineers!
You will explore careers in engineering and technology,
including technology systems and manufacturing processes.
The course addresses social and political consequences of
technological change. Students who successfully complete the
one-year class are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g
elective credit.
Introduction to Engineering Design—Part
of Project Lead the Way, the course curriculum was designed by
engineers for future engineers! You will design solutions to
real-world challenges, including improving existing products
and inventing new ones. Using sophisticated
three-dimensional modeling software, you will analyze the
problems and create design solutions. Students who
successfully complete the one-year class are eligible for
one year of UC-approved a-g elective credit.
Legal and Law Enforcement—You
will gain an understanding of what substance abuse does to
the body and mind. You will also learn about criminal law,
traffic and juvenile law, judicial proceedings, and
emergency preparedness. Successful students will have the
opportunity to participate in field trips to justice
institutions and ride-alongs with police officers. The
class prepares students for advanced training.
Lifeguard Training Classes—Love the water, Baywatch
reruns? Are you a really strong swimmer? You’ll learn the
skills necessary for certification as an American Red Cross
Lifeguard, including ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer,
oxygen administration and use of the Automated External
Defibrillator.
After-school class
Medical
Careers/Health Sciences Academy
Successful completion of academy classes with grades of A or
B can earn a place for the student in the ROP Vocational
Nursing program if additional criteria are met. If courses
are offered after school, high school students from other
campuses can enroll. Please check the online schedule of
classes for courses available on your campus and after
school.
Medical Careers I -
(two semesters): You'll learn how to take
patients vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature,
and pulses per minute.
You’ll learn about
diverse occupations in medical/health occupations found in
hospitals, community health centers and clinics. You will
learn about the roles and responsibilities of various health
care providers. This two-semester class will prepare you for
further study.
Medical Careers II -
(two semesters):
You'll learn human anatomy and
physiology, normal body system functions and diseases and
disorders of those systems. You will also learn standards
required of health workers, including ethical and legal
responsibilities, safety, HIPAA (Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act) rules, infection
control, body mechanics, transporting duties, and advanced
terminology.
You’ll learn about health
care delivery systems, regulatory agencies, research,
current technology, and socio-economic issues affecting
health care.

Medical Careers III
—
Medical Assistant - Clinical (Back Office)- (two semesters):
You will learn to greet patients, take vital signs, record
current medications and complaints, set up patient exam
rooms for specific types of examination; recognize
infection; assist the physician with physical exams and
minor surgical procedures; learn to attach leads and
administer electrocardiograms; administer medication;
perform laboratory procedures, including blood withdrawal,
urinalysis and specimen collection; and assist with
diagnostic procedures. You are preparing jobs such as
medical clinical-back office assistants.
Safety
and Sanitation –
Sanitizing work areas, utensils, cookware, and storage items
are only a part of safety and sanitation: you’ll learn how
to prevent food spoiling; how to keep pests out; how to
maintain safe food temperatures; how to thaw, reheat and
serve foods safely; learn what cleaning and sanitizing
products are safe for the kitchen, and much more. You are
preparing for the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe
exam, which will be administered at the end of the course.
If you pass the exam, the certificate is valid throughout
the United States.
Earn
advanced placement or credits at Cypress College for
successful completion of this course.
Visual Communications—If
you agree with the quote “A picture is worth a thousand
words,” you’ll want to take this class. You’ll learn the
fine art of communicating visually, using art and graphic
design concepts, elements and principals of design, color
theory, and typography in your projects. This class is a-g
college credit certified. Students who successfully complete
this two- semester course can earn one year of UC-approved
fine arts credit.
Water Safety Instructor—If
you are a natural-born teacher and swim like a fish, this
class may be for you. This class trains you in skills you
need to be certified as an American Red Cross Water Safety
Instructor. With the certification you will be able to
teach the ARC “Learn to Swim” program. Prerequisite—must
have the Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate
issued within one year prior to training.

You'll learn
