Guidance
Your on-campus counselor or career guidance specialist (CGS) can
help you with ROP program selection, completion of registration, and
assistance with job placement. Career guidance specialists may
assist you with career interest surveys, aptitude testing, career
research, career information, and career goals. Credits apply to
high school graduation, as determined by the participating district.
The number of credits are determined by the student’s hours of
program attendance and active participation.

classes are for Western High School students.
You'll learn
about the workplace from experts while earning elective
credits and preparing for a great job. This a great
way to start your career today, why delay?
Class
offerings are subject to change each semester.
BITA (Building Industry Technology Academy)—If
you love working with your hands, this four-year
industry-supported academy might be just the thing for you.
In addition to learning carpentry/construction skills and
power/hand tool care and use in the school lab, you’ll
participate in building trades association contests, and
you’ll have opportunities to volunteer for community
projects such as creating a "Doc-In-The-Box" for Project
Africa. At the end of four years, you will be prepared for
jobs in carpentry for the construction trades.
Catering and Event Planning—Do
you instinctively know how to plan for parties? If not, and
you want to become the ultimate party planner, this class is
for you. You’ll learn catering skills for a variety of
events, including themed parties, special occasions, and
wedding receptions. You’ll learn how to handle food
preparation, from gourmet to barbecue. You’ll learn to work
within a budget to estimate costs of food, time and
materials; you’ll discover sources for the best prices, and
you’ll learn to deal with a variety of resources on
location.
Child Development—You’ll
study children’s developmental stages from conception
through early adolescence. You will focus on the
emotional/psychological, cognitive and physical aspects of
development, and on the influences on development of
heredity and environmental factors. Students who
successfully complete Child Development (one year course)
are eligible for one year of UC-approved a-g credit. The
class prepares you for advanced education.
CNC Machining*—If
you are good at math and like working with your hands, CNC
(computer numerically controlled) machining can open the
door to a solid career. You’ll learn to use the lathe,
vertical mill, drill press, and the vertical and horizontal
cut-off. You’ll also learn the setup, operation and
programming of the CNC mill, lathe and router. The program
is NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills)
accredited and teaches to NIMS standards, and prepares you
for certification exams in several performance areas. You
will be prepared for entry-level employment or further
education.

Introduction to Culinary Arts—If
you love to cook or want to learn, this introductory class will give you
more than the basics. You’ll learn garde manger (the art of
fruit and vegetable carving, or how to turn a pumpkin into a
coach); basic cooking, and some
international cooking. You’ll also learn safety and
sanitation, nutrition basics, and food service operations.
The class will prepare you for entry-level jobs and advanced
training.
Advanced Culinary Arts—Take
cooking to an art form and learn skills for entry-level and
mid-level positions in the restaurant, baking and food
service industry. You'll learn learn more about
sanitation, food service operations, nutrition, food
preparation and presentation. You'll learn what social
skills are important to work with guests, and you also learn
how to set up a dining room for customers. Want to be
in management? You'll study management concepts and
you also learn more about food and beverage service.
Prerequisites: completion of Introduction to Culinary Arts
or instructor's permission.
Design and Fabrication for Engineering Careers*—You
will explore metalworking careers through projects that call
for hand and/or machine tools. You’ll learn the basics of
CNC (Computer numerically controlled) machining, CAM
(computer assisted machining) and engineering design solid
modeling. The class prepares you for entry-level employment
and advanced training.

Forensic Science/Crime Scene Investigation (Introduction
to)—You
will learn the basics of crime scene evidence collection and
investigation, crime scene photography, and diagramming a
crime scene. You’ll learn who to interview and what
questions to ask. You’ll sharpen your reasoning skills,your observation skills, and your knowledge of forensic
science. This class prepares you for entry-level employment
and college studies in the field.
Introduction to Engineering Design—Part
of Project Lead the Way, a curriculum designed by engineers
for future engineers! You will design solutions to
real-world challenges, including improving existing products
and inventing new ones. Using sophisticated
three-dimensional modeling software, you will analyze the
problems, create design solutions, and clearly communicate
your ideas and product details to others. Students who
successfully complete the one-year class are eligible for
one year of UC-approved a-g elective credit.
Legal and Law Enforcement—You
will learn about institutions and agencies within the
justice system; criminal, traffic, and juvenile law;
judicial proceedings; substance abuse laws; and emergency
preparedness. You may participate in a ride-along with a
police officer and take various field trips to legal
institutions.

Medical Careers Academy: Medical Careers
I—You will identify roles and responsibilities of a wide
variety of health care professionals and apply basic
entry-level health care to patients in supervised health
care settings, including doctors’ offices, clinics and
hospitals. You are preparing for advanced training.
Principles of Teaching and Learning—Learn
principles of effective teaching, curriculum development,
classroom management, school governance, and explore career
opportunities. Successful students will intern in community
schools. If you complete this one-year course with an A or
B you will be eligible for three units of UC-approved a-g
credit. You are preparing for advanced training.
Professional Dance—Have
some dance experience? Perfect your dance techniques and
prepare for a professional career or post-secondary dance
education in a traditional dance class format. Your focus
will be on learning professional dance techniques, physical
conditioning, choreography and staging showcase
performances. After-school
class MAY be available.
Wood Manufacturing—Have
a feeling for fine woods? Get the satisfaction of making
timeless creations from wood. You’ll be introduced to
cabinet making, pattern making and wood machining for
individual and mass production. This class trains you for
entry-level positions in cabinet making or for advanced
education.
